Building Nonprofit Boards

Effective boards can be a great resource for nonprofits. But even very skilled businesspeople often fail to invest much time in structural issues at nonprofits. These nonprofit boards can end up filled with observer types, busy businesspeople who like the idea of supporting the work, but who are not as engaged as board members should be.

Organizations need to recruit boards with strong functional skills as well as people who are willing to provide general funding for operations and organizational development. Management should take advantage of these experts to strengthen the organization and its leadership.

  • Is your board fully engaged with your nonprofit?
  • Do you need to increase your interaction with your existing board, or to recruit new board members?
